R-value on the label, U-factor in reality

The industry's own guidance is blunt about this. DASMA's technical data sheet on the subject explains that R-value is a calculated figure for a door section alone, ignoring the joints between sections, the end stiles, the perimeter and the hardware, and states plainly that it should not be used for garage door assemblies. U-factor is the measured property of the complete installed assembly, tested to ANSI/DASMA 105, which accounts for the sections, joints, stiles, thermal breaks, air spaces, weather seals and track. Codes address thermal performance in terms of U-factor, and a lower U-factor is better. So a door advertised with a high section R-value and loose joints can underperform a lower-rated door that seals properly. Ask for the tested U-factor of the assembly, and compare the rest of the options on the service list.

What the upgrade actually buys in a Michigan winter

Expect three real effects. The garage swings less, which matters where the space holds a freezer, a water line, paint or a car battery, and the local baseline is 122 days a year below freezing in the GLISA climatology for the city. Larger doors bow more, darker colors facing direct sun bow more, thermally broken designs have greater potential bow than non-broken ones, and aluminum and plastic components expand more than steel. Practically, that argues against a very dark finish on a wide south-facing door, and it explains a door that seals cleanly in October and shows a gap at one edge in February.

Weight, springs and the older housing stock

An insulated door is heavier than the single-skin door it replaces, sometimes by a third. The counterbalance has to be recalculated: springs sized to the old weight will leave the new door sinking, and the opener will carry the difference until a gear strips. That is the most common mistake on retrofit insulation kits too, since adding rigid foam or a kit to an existing door adds weight the springs were never wound for.
